Kuemper’s dozen treys doom Cyclone girls, 67-47

CARROLL (Jan. 26) -- It wasn’t that Harlan Community played poorly Friday night; the Kuemper Catholic girls simply played very well.
Knocking down 12-of-19 three-pointers, the Knights had six different players hit a trey and pulled away in the fourth quarter to hand the Cyclones a 67-47 conference defeat. It was the most points scored against HCHS during regulation so far this season.
The Cyclones’ fourth straight loss dropped them to 7-9 overall and 5-4 in the Hawkeye Ten (sixth place) while the Knights improved to 12-5 overall and 6-3 in the H-10 (tied for third).
“It didn’t seem like they could do anything wrong,” said HCHS head coach Zach Klaassen. “They were 12-of-19 from the arc. It didn’t matter if we had a hand up or we didn’t have a hand up... They just had our number."
Kuemper’s 12 treys came against 32 minutes of man-to-man defense, adding to the Cyclone frustration. Maci Overmohle led the Knights with five 3-pointers and 15 points while Mallory Badding (12) and Brooklyn Baake (10) both knocked down a pair of threes.
HCHS never led in the contest, but managed to cut a 13-point second-quarter deficit down to five on two occasions in the third.
Lexie Holloway (6 rebounds) and Macie Leinen paced HCHS with 10 points each, followed by Nicole Lange with eight points, six assists and five rebounds.
