Klein finishes first IWCC track season as juco All-American in decathlon

HUTCHINSON, KAN. -- Marcus Klein capped a banner freshman season for the Iowa Western Community College track team by placing sixth in the men’s decathlon at the 2017 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held May 18-20 at Gowans Stadium in Hutchinson, Kansas. Marcus is the son of Rose Klein (Harlan) and Tracy Klein (Nebraska) and a 2016 graduate of Harlan Community High School.
A Presidential Scholar who earned a 4.0 GPA as an IWCC freshman, Klein was a track and field walk-on this past year but recently signed a letter of intent to continue his athletic career for the Reivers. His sixth-place finish at nationals resulted in Klein being named an NJCAA and UASTF All-American.
Klein scored 6,210 points in the decathlon, which was extended an extra day (from two to three) due to multiple weather delays during the meet. The decathlon consists of the following 10 events: long jump, high jump, 110-meter high hurdles, javelin, shot put, discus, pole vault, 1500-meter run, 400-meter dash and 100-meter dash. Seven of those 10 events were new to Klein this year.
