Kaster challenges for individual title at Red Oak

HCHS sophomore leads much of the race before placing second; Cyclone squads both finish in top three

RED OAK -- While many of her teammates have battled illness or injury during the first few weeks of the cross country season, Greichaly Kaster remains a solid mark of consistency for Harlan Community.
Kaster placed second to fellow sophomore Ashley Wendt of Atlantic at Monday’s Red Oak Tiger Invite, giving her four straight top-five finishes to start the year, including back-to-back second-place medals.
Kaster’s teammates all placed in the top half of the field on the demanding and hilly five-kilometer course at the Red Oak Country Club, lifting the Cyclone girls to a season-best second-place team finish. Atlantic placed four runners in the top seven and won the girls meet with a score of 23, followed by HCHS (49) and Griswold (85).
The Trojans also won the boys team title with a 36, Red Oak placed second with a 61 and the Cyclones (96) took third despite number-one runner Reagan Hansen being unable to finish the race.
Kaster bolted to an early lead on Monday and held off Wendt for the majority of the race before being passed with less than a mile to go. Wendt posted a winning time of 21 minutes, 48 seconds, while Kaster finished in 22-flat, about 47 seconds ahead of third place.
Running out front was a new experience for Kaster and something she plans to learn from going forward.
