IKM-Manning girls set for state golf tourney debut

Wolves punch ticket to Marshalltown with second-place regional final effort; Exira-EHK’s Anthofer falls short

ATLANTIC -- The IKM-Manning girls golf team clinched a state tournament berth last Monday (May 20) by placing second at the Class 1A, Region 2 Final Tournament played at the Atlantic Country Club.
Boyer Valley won the meet with a team score of 413 and IKM-Manning scored a 422 to edge Griswold by a stroke for second place. The Bulldogs and Wolves will travel to Marshalltown’s American Legion Golf Course to compete in the 1A State Tournament on May 28-29.
A balanced scorecard was the key for IKM-Manning as its top four finishers shot between 101 (Bailey Schechinger) and 110 (Emily Powers). Hanna Mullen and Bre Muhlbauer checked in with scores of 105 and 106, respectively.
The Wolves’ top four played remarkably consistent golf, scoring between 4 and 7 on all but four holes combined. This year marks the first trip to state golf as a team for the IKM-Manning girls.
“There was a feeling early in the season that something about this year was just different,” said IKM-M coach Kevin Lahndorf. “The girls have worked really hard to improve their game each day and we knew there was a possibility that we could accomplish something special."
Anthofer fall short
Exira-EHK junior Jacey Anthofer, who placed 12th at last year’s state meet, competed as an individual in Atlantic and fell short of a return trip to state after shooting a 102.
Anthofer carded a solid 47 on the front nine but was plagued by one bad hole - a 14 on hole number 13 - on the back nine and shot a 55. She needed a 97 to tie for sixth place and qualify for state.
