HCHS wins Atlantic Tourney following PK marathon

ATLANTIC -- It took 12 rounds of penalty kicks to determine a winner, but the Harlan Community boys soccer team eventually emerged with a 1-0 overtime shootout victory over Kuemper Catholic last Saturday in the championship game of the 7th annual Atlantic Trojan Soccer Tournament.
Following 80 minutes of scoreless regulation, the Cyclones and Knights went straight to the PK shootout and required seven extra attempts to finally decide first place. Wren Koch, who went 2-for-2 in the shootout, scored the title-clinching kick for HCHS while Kuemper’s Kyle Derner missed high.
Both teams converted 4-of-5 PK’s to start the shootout, then matched each other (miss or make) on six sudden-death kicks before it ended on attempt number 12. The Cyclones finished 8-of-12 while the Knights were 7-of-12. HCHS goalie Keaton Jones recorded saves on two of the Kuemper misses.
The Cyclones opened the tournament with a 5-0 first-round win over Carroll Public, scoring four of their goals in the first half. They outshot the Tigers 31-3 overall and 17-1 on goal. Richard Blackman scored two of the Cyclone goals while Jordan Fink, Tanner Fink and Michael Heithoff all scored once.
