Lewis Central 5, HCHS 1
HARLAN -- Held hitless for four innings and scoreless for five, Lewis Central tied the game with a run in the sixth and scored four in the top of the seventh to beat the Harlan Community softball team 5-1 Monday night for its eighth consecutive win.
HCHS squandered a golden opportunity to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth when it loaded the bases with nobody out but failed to score against LC ace Ashtyn Miller, who struck out 12 and walked just two in the contest.
The Titans (12-2-1) then got the break they needed to start the seventh when a soft comebacker wasn’t fielded cleanly by Cyclone pitcher Emily Brouse. An infield single off the leg of shortstop Kaylie Briggs was followed by a Taylor Elam RBI single into the left field corner that was briefly bobbled, allowing a second run to score. Later in the inning, Gabrielle Martinez drove in two more LC runs with a double to right.
Briggs went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored the lone HCHS run in the bottom of the fifth. Morgan Schaben was 2-for-3 and Madison Parman added a single. Both teams finished with six hits.
Atlantic 3, HCHS 1
ATLANTIC -- Trojan junior ace Ally Anderson took a perfect game into the sixth inning before settling for a two-hitter Tuesday night as fifth-ranked (3-A) Atlantic held off the Cyclones 3-1. Anderson did not issue a single walk while striking out six in the ball game.
HCHS sophomore Morgan Schaben matched Anderson on the scoreboard until the fifth, when a Baylee Newell single, a walk and a one-out error set the table for Atlantic to plate three unearned runs. The Trojans (12-0) drew two bases-loaded walks and also scored on a fielder’s choice during the inning. Schaben finished with six walks and seven Ks before giving way to Emily Brouse in relief.
Molly Gubbels and Schaben both singled for the only two Cyclone hits of the night. HCHS stranded two runners in the sixth inning before breaking up the shutout in the seventh on Madison Parman’s RBI ground out.
