HCHS scores Hawkeye Ten softball sweep at Shenandoah
SHENANDOAH (June 21) -- The Harlan Community softball team continued its run of success against the southern half of the Hawkeye Ten Conference on Thursday, sweeping a doubleheader at Shenandoah by scores of 7-2 and 13-0 in four innings.
HCHS is now 7-1 in varsity twin bills vs. Creston, Clarinda, Glenwood and Shenandoah this summer and Thursday’s wins snapped a six-game losing skid and kept the Cyclones (11-13 overall) in fifth place in the league standings at 9-5. The Fillies dropped to 9-15 overall and 3-11 in the H-10.
HCHS scored six runs in the last two innings to take game one and used a 10-run fourth to end the night cap early.
Morgan Schaben (7-9) pitched a complete game five-hitter in game one, allowing two earned runs, walking two batters and striking out five. Eighth-grader Tianna Kasperbauer (1-2) earned her first varsity win in game two, allowing just one hit in four scoreless innings, walking three and striking out five.
The Cyclones trailed 2-1 in the first game when Lexi Larsen followed Madison Schumacher’s sixth-inning leadoff double with a two-run homer to give Harlan its first lead. Then in the top of the seventh, Schaben doubled home a run for her second RBI of the game and Larsen followed with a two-run double. Madison Parman then doubled home Larsen to make it 7-2.
In game two, HCHS scored 13 runs on just eight hits, taking advantage of eight walks and two hit batters.
Parman went 3-for-3 with two RBI, Schaben singled and drove in four runs while Kate Heithoff, Larsen and pinch runners Maci Schmitz and Jordan Heese all scored at least two runs.
