HCHS holds off Solon, punching return trip to state final

DES MOINES -- Clinging to a two-run lead in Friday’s Class 3-A state semifinal vs. Solon, Harlan Community coach Steve Daeges had all the confidence in the world in junior pitcher Josh Cheek.
With Brett Sears and Nick Tarney warmed up and ready to provide relief, Cheek didn’t disappoint in the top of the seventh, working around a leadoff walk to cap a three-hitter as the Cyclones held off the Spartans 7-5 at Principal Park.
Cheek (7-1) walked number eight batter Johnny Kessler to open the final frame, then retired the next three hitters on fly balls to speedy center fielder Nick Foss.
