HCHS girls showcase depth, win fourth team title at Cardinal Relays

 EARLHAM (April 9) -- The depth of the Harlan Community girls track team was on full display in Earlham Tuesday night as the Cyclones scored twice in nine of 12 individual events and placed in the top four of all seven relays to win the girls’ portion of the Cardinal Co-Ed Relays.
 HCHS won four events and posted 169.33 points to outlast Panorama (156 points, 7 golds) and 11 other schools for its fourth team title in five meets. The Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton girls scored five points for 13th place while the Spartan boys came in 12th with 20 points.
 The Cyclone girls’ four gold medals included a new personal-best long jump mark of 15 feet, 9.25 inches by freshman Kaia Bieker as well as a victory in the 100-meter dash by freshman Delaney Wegner, with teammate Savanna Musich close behind in second.
 HCHS also won the 4x200 and 4x100 relays, capped by a season-best time of 52.92 in the 4x100. Musich, Wegner and Abby Alberti each ran a leg of both winning relays.
 Another big highlight from the field events was Lauren Andersen’s second-place discus throw of 116 feet, five inches - a new ‘PR.’ Grace Wegner cleared 4’10” for second place in the high jump, Lucy Borkowski was second in the 3,000 and Musich added a second-place 200-meter dash time of 28.18 to her night’s work.
 The Exira-EHK girls scored all of their points in the sprint medley (7th), distance medley (7th) and shuttle hurdle (8th) relays.
 The Spartan boys placed in five events, highlighted by Jayden Goodwin’s second-place time of 24.46 in the 200 dash. Goodwin also anchored the sprint medley to fifth place and helped the 4x100 relay take sixth.
 Des Moines Christian won the boys team title with 154 points.
