HCHS girls notch fourth win vs. Wolverines
HARLAN (Jan. 31) -- The Harlan Community girls established an 11-2 lead early in the second quarter Thursday night and were able to hold off Nodaway Valley for a 47-36 non-conference win, improving to 4-12 overall.
The scrappy Wolverines (10-8) closed the gap to 22-21 early in the second half but the Cyclones managed to pull away. HCHS sophomore Brecken Van Baale closed the third quarter with a fast break bucket and opened the fourth with a three-pointer. Macie Leinen’s putback then gave the Cyclones their largest lead at 37-25.
Van Baale finished with a team-high 13 points, freshman Raegen Wicks scored eight of her 10 points in the second half, Ashley Hall had eight points and Macie Leinen totaled seven points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots.
The Cyclones shot under 25 percent from the field but got to the free throw line 33 times, making 16. Claire Schmitz led HCHS with nine total rebounds, including five offensive boards.
