HCHS girls finish fifth at 1A state bowling

WATERLOO (Feb. 18) -- Harlan Community’s third trip in six years to the Class 1A Girls State Bowling Tournament resulted in its best finish yet as the Cyclones placed fifth out of eight teams Monday at Cadillac Lanes in Waterloo.
HCHS checked in one spot and 97 pins ahead of sixth-place Red Oak, registering an individual total of 1,704 and a Baker Games total of 735 for a 2,439 team score. Louisa-Muscatine secured three of the top four places individually and won the 1A team championship with a total of 2,947, holding off Camanche by 15 pins.
“I am so proud of everyone and how much we grew as a team this year,” stated HCHS head coach David Tyrrel. “From top to bottom, we were as fundamentally sound as any team in the state. With three freshmen and only one senior, I expect next year to be even better!”
The Cyclones were led on Monday by sophomore Abby Swank, who put together games of 194 and 186 to place 11th out of 50 bowlers with a 380. Olivia Petersen, the team’s lone senior in her first year out for the sport, stepped up her game at state with a 19th-place score of 345 (189-156), closely followed by junior Jayden Gessert in 22nd with a 342 (160-182).
Remaining Cyclone scores included freshman Sydney O’Neill in 27th (321), freshman Madison Horn in 29th (316) and freshman Ania Kaster in 45th (256).
