HCHS girls add to title collection at Kuemper Invite

Gross places third for Cyclone boys; Dreyer and Beermann sixth for IKM-Manning squads

CARROLL (Sept. 15) -- One mark of a great cross country team is consistency - a word that epitomizes what the Harlan Community girls have done so far this season.
Battling heat and humidity at Carroll’s Swan Lake State Park Saturday morning, the fourth-ranked (3A) Cyclones took on a difficult course with courage and determination to easily win the Class A girls team title of the Kuemper Catholic Invite.
HCHS sophomore Trey Gross also stayed consistent, placing third out of 188 Class A boys for his fourth straight top-10 finish to open the year. Brennon Munch added a 19th-place medal for the Cyclone boys, who finished eighth out of 12 teams.
IKM-Manning and Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton, meanwhile, competed in the Class B portion of the meet. The Wolves placed second in the boys team standings and the Spartan girls took third. Together, the two schools combined for 10 medalists and four top-10 individuals, led by sixth-place showings from IKM-M’s Quentin Dreyer and Emma Beermann.
The Cyclone girls continued to thrive by staying in a pack for as long as possible, placing their five counted scores between fifth (senior Greichaly Kaster) and 12th.
HCHS won the meet with a total of 41, easily distancing itself from 11th-ranked Atlantic (70) and No. 13 North Polk (72). Spencer (ranked 8th) slipped to fourth place after its number-three girl was unable to finish.
The Cyclone girls have now won three consecutive meet titles after placing second to Glenwood by one point in the season opener.
