HCHS girls 1-1 in home triangular
HARLAN (April 25) -- The Harlan Community girls golf team finished one stroke away from a triangular sweep at the Harlan Golf and Country Club Thursday, losing to Clarinda by one stroke (217-218) and beating Denison-Schleswig (232) by 14 shots.
The Cyclones did boast the top medalist in junior Haley Manz, who shot a steady round of 49 to edge runner-up Gracie Brown of Clarinda by one stroke. Manz’s best hole of the day was a par-4 on number three.
Kayla Powers shot a 53 for HCHS while Jocelyn Cheek’s 56 and Ashley Hall’s 60 also counted toward the team score. Cheek had the only other Cyclone par - a three - on hole number five.
“Watching the two teams I thought that we played better than Clarinda did overall,” stated HCHS coach Willie Baughman. “All five [varsity] girls had really good scores, but we all had about one or two holes that really hindered us. We had a couple of three-putts that were unfortunate and those really hurt in the end."
