HCHS falls 3-1 to third-ranked Crusaders

Class 2-A Boys Substate Soccer

SIOUX CITY -- Harlan Community played hard and hung close, but simply didn’t have enough possession time or shots to save its season in Wednesday’s Class 2-A substate semifinal boys soccer game at Sioux City Bishop Heelan.
The third-ranked Crusaders scored off a free kick just 52 seconds into the match, then added a penalty kick in the 26th minute and a third goal midway through the second half to beat the Cyclones, 3-1, at Memorial Field.
Bishop Heelan improved to 14-2 and advanced to state Saturday with a 3-2 overtime win over Denison-Schleswig, trailing most of the way before tying the match with 18 seconds left in regulation.
HCHS, which scored its only goal on Richard Blackman’s free kick directly into the net with 4:13 remaining, finished 9-9 overall.
Cyclone head coach Dave Voge called Heelan a very good passing and possession team, which was evident by their shot advantages of 28-5 (total) and 14-2 (on goal).
