HCHS closes regular season with split vs. Council Bluffs schools

Cyclone baseball team loses at AL before ruling TJ

COUNCIL BLUFFS (July 15) -- The Harlan Community baseball team let leads of 5-0 and 8-6 slip away on Monday night at Abraham Lincoln, falling to the Lynx 9-8 in a back-and-forth non-conference affair.
The game ended in ugly fashion in the bottom of the seventh after AL’s Hunter Nice hit a leadoff single. As pinch-runner Brian Hunter advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, no one was covering third for the Cyclones and it became a foot race between Hunter and shortstop Connor Bruck. First baseman Brett Sears tried to hit Bruck in stride for a possible tag, but the throw got away and Hunter continued home to score the winning run.
It was that kind of night for HCHS, which at one point had the pitcher and catcher both lose track of the outs to let a Lynx run score following a strikeout.
“Obviously we didn’t play very well, especially defensively," said HCHS coach Steve Daeges. "We got out to a 5-0 lead and I think we put it on coast... We just were not very sharp, so looking forward I hope it’s a night that we learn from a little bit and hopefully have a better end of the week.”
Senior Derec Weyer had a big game in defeat for the Cyclones, starting with a first-inning grand slam over the 20-foot fence in dead center. Weyer ripped an RBI double in his next at-bat to make it a 5-0 game in the third. He finished 3-for-4 with five RBI.
The Lynx got to Cyclone starter Connor Bruck in a four-run bottom of the third that was capped by Nice’s two-run homer. Austin Wickman’s two-run single put AL up 6-5 in the fourth. Bruck, who is 7-0 on the year, allowed six earned runs in four innings, giving up five hits, walking one and hitting two batters.
HCHS rallied to regain the lead with three runs in the fifth, starting with a one-out error and a double by Isaiah Ahrenholtz. Brenden Bartley hit an RBI single and two more runs scored on wild pitches by reliever Kobie Ferguson.
The Lynx tied the game with two runs against reliever Joey Moser in the sixth.
Weyer and Sears finished 3-for-4 at the plate for HCHS while Ahrenholtz and Bartley were both 2-for-4. Luke Schaben went 1-for-3 and scored three times.
