HCHS boys, IKM-M squads perform well at Denison

Cyclones win boys team title with nine golds; Erlemeier, Rasmussen both win two individual events

 DENISON (April 5) -- The boys teams from Harlan Community and IKM-Manning combined to win all seven relays and 15 of 19 events overall at Friday’s Denison-Schleswig Co-Ed Relays, placing first and second, respectively, while the IKM-M girls also made a strong second-place showing.
 Of the 57 boys medals presented to top-three finishers, 38 went to individuals and relays from HCHS and IKM-Manning. The Cyclones won nine events and scored 196 points while the Wolves won six events, broke two school records and scored 155. Denison placed third out of six teams with 79.
 The host Monarchs won the girls half of the meet with 189 points, followed by IKM-Manning (119), Tri-Center (108) and Logan-Magnolia (106).
HCHS boys highlights:
 Michael Erlemeier competed in four individual events and had a big night with three personal records, winning the long jump and 400-meter dash (51.47), placing second in the 200 dash (23.49) and taking third in the 100 (11.57).
 Seniors Caleb Bieker and Derec Weyer did their part in the throwing events with a combined 36 points. Bieker won the shot put with a season-best toss of 48 feet, 7.5 inches and placed second in the discus (147-10). Weyer continued his rapid improvement in the discus with a first-place throw of 154-1 (new PR) and placed second in the shot put (46-1).
 In the relays, HCHS took gold in the shuttle hurdle, distance medley, sprint medley and 4x100 and placed second to IKM-M in the 4x800, 4x200 and 4x400. The D-med and 4x800 both posted season-best times with the help of Trey Gross, who later won the mile.
 Individual ‘PR’s’ were also recorded by Eli Boldan in the 400 (2nd place), Thomas Fah in the 110 high hurdles (2nd) and Johnathan Monson in the 200 (3rd).
IKM-M boys highlights:
 In addition to winning the 4x800, 4x200 and 4x400 relays with season-best times, the Wolves also improved their times in the distance medley (2nd place) and the shuttle hurdle relay (3rd).
 Individual success was a big part of the night as well, starting with freshman Amos Rasmussen’s sweep of the 100 and 200-meter sprints. Rasmussen broke his own school record with a time of 11.09 in the 100 dash (fastest in Class 1A so far this year) and ran a new ‘PR’ of 23.13 in the 200. He also placed second in the long jump.
 Quentin Dreyer had a great night as well, placing third in the 3,200, 800 and 1,600 in a demanding trifecta. Dreyer set the school record in the 3,200 (10:40.23) and clocked a personal-best time in the 800. Alex Lingle won the high jump by clearing 5’10” for the first time this season.
IKM-M girls highlights:
 Senior Gabrielle Cadwell took home the IKM-Manning girls’ lone gold medal after winning the 200 dash with a personal-best time of 27.96 seconds. She also helped the Wolves place second in the distance medley and 4x400 relays with season-best times and anchored the sprint medley to third.
 In the throwing events, Lexi Branning placed second in the shot put and discus, including a season-best discus throw of 102-3.
 Alexa Ahrenholtz tied her personal-best in the high jump by clearing five feet - good for second place - and Macie Doyel placed second in the 400 hurdles with a ‘PR’ of 1:24.55.
