HCHS boys finish sixth at 3A sectional golf

DENISON (May 10) -- For the second straight year, the Harlan Community boys golf season ended with a sixth-place sectional finish at Denison’s Majestic Hills Golf Course.
HCHS shot a team score of 352 at last Friday’s Class 3A Sectional Tournament - just 10 strokes out of second place but four spots behind where it needed to be to advance.
Carroll easily placed first with a 320 while Atlantic narrowly secured second place with a 342 and also qualified for this Friday’s district meet at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club. A log jam of teams placed between third and seventh: Glenwood 343, ADM 344, Denison-Schleswig 348, HCHS 352 and Creston 353.
“The golf course got the better of us today, in particular the greens,” stated HCHS coach Chad Swanson. “They were running much, much faster than anything we have seen this year. It was a fair test as all eight teams had to putt on the same greens, but... everybody struggled to an extent.”
Blake Goshorn paced the Cyclone card with an 86 on the day, followed by Jay Swanson with an 87, Mason Peters 89 and Jacob Dotzler 90. Nathan Schiltz shot a 97 and Darren Stein had a 104.
Atlantic’s Cyle Renaud won first-place medalist honors at Denison with a hard-earned 74 while Drew Schurke of Carroll (75) was the runner-up.
