HCHS baseball team beats Cardinals 12-2 and 5-1

 CLARINDA (June 6) -- Isaiah Ahrenholtz drove in four runs in game one and Tyler Schaben pitched the team’s first seven-inning complete game of the year in the night cap Thursday as Harlan Community swept a baseball doubleheader at Clarinda by scores of 12-2 (five innings) and 5-1.
 The fifth-ranked (3A) Cyclones improved to 9-1 overall and 7-1 in Hawkeye Ten Conference play, good for second place behind Lewis Central. The Cardinals fell to 2-7 overall and 1-6 in the H-10 before beating St. Albert on Friday.
 Ahrenholtz, Joey Moser and Luke Schaben all had three hits in the twin bill, including a double by Moser and Schaben in both games. HCHS only outhit Clarinda by a combined 15-12 but took advantage of three Cardinal errors in each game and 16 total walks while issuing just three.

 The Cyclones blew open a 6-2 game with six runs in the top of the fifth - an outburst that began with four straight one-out walks and also included a Brett Sears’ RBI single and a two-run knock by Ahrenholtz.
 Sophomore Trey Gross (1-0) picked up his first varsity win in relief of Riley Kohles, allowing four hits and two runs in three innings. Kohles opened the game with two scoreless frames.
 Ahrenholtz finished 3-for-4 with four RBI, hitting an RBI double in the first and an RBI single in the third before adding his two-run single in the fifth. Sears singled and walked twice, stole two bases and scored three times.
HCHS 5, Clarinda 1
 Tyler Schaben (1-0) retired the first seven batters he faced and pitched a steady seven innings in game two, allowing seven hits and one run, walking none, hitting one batter and striking out five in a 99-pitch outing.
 HCHS also totaled seven hits, including two each by Moser (one double), Luke Schaben (one double) and Derec Weyer. Schaben also walked, stole two bases and scored three runs.
 Clarinda scored its only run in the third when Wyatt Schmitt doubled and scored on a Jakob Childs single. The Cardinal 7-through-9 batters combined to go 6-for-9 in the contest but the rest of the lineup had just one hit.
