HCHS 3-0, Spartans 1-2 in Atlantic Softball Tourney

 ATLANTIC (June 1) -- Harlan Community finished 3-0 and Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton went 1-2 with a win over Lewis Central at last Saturday’s Atlantic Softball Tournament.
HCHS 8, Panorama 2 - The Cyclones trailed 2-1 early but put up crooked numbers in the third inning (2 runs), fourth (3) and sixth (2) to take control.
 HCHS tallied 13 hits in the contest, including a pair of doubles by Madison Schumacher (3 RBI) and one double each for Kate Heithoff (3-for-4, 3 runs) and Julia Schechinger (3 RBI). Morgan Schaben added two hits and one RBI.
 Schaben and Emily Brouse both pitched three innings. Schaben allowed four hits and two runs while Brouse allowed just one hit and notched seven strikeouts.
HCHS 3, ACGC 0 - Julia Schechinger went 3-for-3, Morgan Schaben was 2-for-3 with a double and Madison Schumacher belted a home run in the Cyclones’ 3-0 win over the Chargers.
 Tianna Kasperbauer also had two hits and pitched five innings of two-hit ball with eight strikeouts in the circle.
HCHS 6, Glenwood 0 - Schaben (five innings) and Kasperbauer (one) combined on a one-hit shutout against the Rams, who ended the Cyclones’ season in regional play last summer. Schaben struck out seven and walked just one batter before Kasperbauer struck out the side to end the game.
 HCHS set the tone with four runs in the first inning, capped by a three-run home run by Emily Brouse.
 Kennadi Carey finished 3-for-3 at the plate while Heithoff, Schaben (one home run) and Schumacher (one double) all had two hits.
Red Oak 9, Exira-EHK 3 - The Spartans totaled eight hits against the Tigers but were playing catch-up the whole way in a 9-3 defeat.
 Mollie Rasmussen went 2-for-3 with a double and one run scored to lead E-EHK. Kami Waymire hit a solo home run and Lexi Madsen doubled and had one RBI.
 Macy Emgarten took the loss in the circle, allowing seven hits and six runs (three earned) in three and two-thirds innings.
Exira-EHK 6, CB LC 5 - The Spartans took a 5-2 lead after two innings and held off the Titans 6-5 for their only win of the day.
 Rasmussen and Emgarten split the pitching duties, each allowing four hits in three innings. Emgarten walked one and struck out seven.
 Exira-EHK totaled eight singles in the contest - two each by Waymire and Shay Burmeister, who both scored a run and combined to drive in three.
Clarinda 4, Exira-EHK 3 - The Spartans rallied to take a 3-2 lead in the fifth, but the Cardinals scored single runs in the sixth and the seventh to win 4-3.
 Emgarten went the full seven innings in the circle, allowing just two hits and no earned runs, walking one and striking out eight.
 Waymire doubled home a run while for Exira-EHK and Rasmussen, Tatum Grubbs, Burmeister, Abbie Poldberg and Quinn Grubbs all singled.
