Hansen places eighth in 3A girls 400-meter hurdles

DES MOINES (May 18) -- Harlan Community junior hurdler Chloe Hansen could check off every box but a school record following Friday’s 400-meter hurdles race at Drake Stadium.
 • Hit each hurdle in stride - check.
 • Improve personal-best time - check.
 • Take home a state medal - check.
Breaking the school record will have to wait until next year, and that’s just fine with Hansen, who improved her ‘PR’ to 1:06.41 and used a strong surge to the finish line to secure an eighth-place medal in Class 3A.
She scored the Cyclone girls’ only point of the meet as they competed in just three events at the 2018 State Co-Ed Track and Field Championships.
Also competing as an individual for HCHS was freshman thrower Madison Schumacher in the shot put. Schumacher improved her ‘PR’ by about two feet at the May 10 state qualifier and backed that up with a toss of 35 feet, 7.5 inches to place 13th at the state meet Friday.
The Cyclones’ only relay state qualifier was the 4x800 team of Abby Alberti, Kara Rueschenberg, Liv Freund and Greichaly Kaster, who finished 22nd on Thursday afternoon in 10:24.08. The relay made a lot of strides late in the season to punch its state ticket.
