Gross joins 100-win club as Wolves sweep Riverside

IRWIN (June 14) -- Exactly one week after IKM-Manning’s Joy Gross secured career coaching win number 700, daughter Peyton Gross notched a big milestone of her own Thursday night at the Irwin softball diamond.
Pitching 11 quality innings and helping her own cause with five hits at the plate, Gross earned career wins 99 and 100 as the 2nd-ranked Wolves swept Riverside in a doubleheader, 10-0 and 11-1.
Gross pitched a six-inning one-hit shutout in game one, striking out 11 and walking three, then followed up with a five-inning three-hitter in the night cap (seven K’s, four walks).
Sporting a 14-1 record on the year, Gross improved her career mark to 100-26 and became just the second pitcher in Joy Gross’ 33-year coaching career to surpass 100 wins.
“Pretty cool... And to (do) it at home in front of her friends and family, that was pretty nice,” Joy Gross said. “It’s always a little more special when you have a moment at home. You can’t dictate that. It just happened to work out nice for us.”
Arynn Rasmussen, a 2001 IKM graduate, finished with a 114-55 career mark under Coach Gross. Prior to her arrival, at least three other pitchers from the IKM or Irwin-Kirkman days won 100-plus games as well: Ande Rasmussen (Arynn’s sister), Beth (Gawley) Hagedorn and Lynne (Larson) White.
In the early game, Zoey Melton went 3-for-4 with a double and run scored to lead the offense. After totaling 15 hits in game one, the Wolves had 14 more in game two, led by Gross going 3-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored.
