Freshman powers Panorama past Wolves in regional semi

IRWIN -- When IKM-Manning scored four runs in the top of the second inning - aided by a crafy bunting game and three Panorama errors - the Wolves appeared well on their way to victory in last Friday’s Class 2-A, Region 2 softball semifinal.
Undaunted by the situation, however, a youthful Panthers team overtook the momentum an inning later and never looked back, plating eight runs in the third and fourth innings to knock off the 11th-rated Wolves 8-4 at the Irwin softball diamond.
The Panorama comeback was spearheaded by an unlikely source as freshman catcher Lydia Knapp, who entered the game with no home runs and eight RBI in 57 at-bats, went 3-for-3 with two homers, a double off the fence and four runs-batted-in.
Knapp ignited her team’s three-run third with a long home run to right-center, then crushed a three-run shot to left during a five-run fourth. She added a line-drive double off the left-center field fence for good measure in the fifth.
Supported by the offensive outburst, Panorama senior pitcher Meredith Olson (15-6) allowed just two singles over the last five innings (she also hit three batters) and was aided by some solid defense as the Panthers finished off the upset and improved to 16-7.
IKM-Manning, which was looking to get back to state after placing fourth in 2-A a year ago, bowed out two wins shy of Fort Dodge with a final mark of 22-8.
