Four Cyclones make INA All-State baseball list

Sears, Juhl cited as first-teamers

DES MOINES -- With team success comes individual plaudits.
On Tuesday, four players from the state champion Harlan Community Cyclones were recognized on the Iowa Newspaper Association’s 2016 All-State Baseball teams.
HCHS junior Dillon Sears (infield) and senior Kyle Juhl (utility) were both selected to the Class 3-A first team, senior Brett Croghan was named second-team utility and junior Josh Cheek earned third-team utility status.
Croghan was also a second-team selection last year and a third-teamer in 2014. Sears was named to the third team last year while Juhl and Cheek are all-state recipients for the first time.
A panel of INA sports writers chose first, second and third teams for all four classes while also naming senior captains. This year’s captains include: Spencer Van Scoyoc of Cedar Rapids Jefferson (4-A); Grant Judkins of Pella (3-A); Javin Drake of Wilton (2-A); and Brady Harpenau of 1-A champion Remsen St. Mary’s.
In addition to Sears and Juhl, four other southwest Iowa players earned first-team recognition: junior catcher Joel Thompson and senior pitcher Caleb Shudak (utility) of Lewis Central (Class 4-A); Glenwood junior infielder Cole Loeffelbein (3-A); and Kuemper Catholic junior infielder Rease Snyder (2-A).
HCHS enjoyed a banner season in 2016, following up last year’s state runner-up finish by punching its sixth consecutive trip to state and winning the 3-A championship last Saturday night. The Cyclones finished 30-5 overall and placed second to Lewis Central in the Hawkeye Ten Conference with a mark of 17-3.
Here’s a summary on each Cyclone all-state selection.
