Fillies hand HCHS big loss

SHENANDOAH -- For the Harlan Community girls basketball team, things can only go up from here.
Hitting the 30-turnover mark for the second time in as many games, the Cyclones were handed a 77-48 defeat at Shenandoah Friday night in the Hawkeye Ten Conference opener for both teams.
The 11th-rated (3-A) Fillies (4-0), who did not graduate a senior off last year’s 15-9 squad, beat the Cyclone girls for the first time since the 2002-03 season.
HCHS (0-2) committed 30 turnovers in the contest and has now turned the ball over 61 times in losing to 3rd-rated (2-A) Treynor and Shenandoah by a combined 54 points. The Cyclones, who lost just two regular season games during the last three years combined, will look to turn a corner when they host Denison-Schleswig (2-1) on Friday at 6:00 p.m.
HCHS head coach Zach Klaassen noted that his team executed fairly well in half court sets when it got settled into an offense, but the high turnover count against opposing pressure continues to be a problem. Klaassen believes the Cyclones’ troubles are more mental than physical.
