Fast start carries HCHS girls to seventh win

HARLAN -- Scoring the game’s first 16 points wasn’t necessarily a sign of things to come Tuesday night, but it was a key difference-maker in the Harlan Community girls’ 57-44 win over Atlantic.
The 3rd-ranked (Class 4-A) Cyclones were never seriously threatened by the Trojans, but never quite pulled away as they shook off the rust from a two-week holiday break and improved to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference - all alone in first place.
Guards Jordyn Moser and Allison Bruck paced HCHS with 20 and 18 points, respectively, combining for six three-pointers, 10 rebounds and six steals in the Cyclones’ seventh straight victory. Emma Ahrenholtz had seven points while Taylor Frederick and Bailey Hansen added six apiece.
After taking a 16-0 lead out of the gate, HCHS traded runs with the Trojans (5-5, 2-3 H-10) as the margin wavered between 10 and 20 points the rest of the way.
