Denison, TJ claim Cyclone Invite titles

Five area runners earn medals as HCHS squads finish sixth, eighth

HARLAN -- For the first time in nine years, Harlan Community did not claim a varsity team or individual champion during Saturday’s Cyclone Invitational cross country meet at the Harlan Golf and Country Club.
The Denison-Schleswig girls won their second straight team title in Harlan while the Thomas Jefferson boys snapped a two-year HCHS run of home meet victories. Prior to that, the Cyclone girls won the crown six consecutive years from 2008 to 2013.
Saturday morning’s individual champs were Karley Larson of Underwood and Jerry Jorgensen of Treynor. Larson clocked a five-kilometer time of 19:46 to edge Denison’s Raegan Anderson by 23 seconds and Jorgensen held off Tee Jay’s McGwire Midkiff, 17:22 to 17:30.
Local squads HCHS and AHSTW combined for five medalists on the day and 11 finishes among the top half of the field.
