D-S girls outscore HCHS 8-4
DENISON -- The Denison-Schleswig girls scored five goals in the final 26 minutes Thursday night to pull away from Harlan Community, 8-4, in a high-scoring Hawkeye Ten Conference soccer match.
HCHS, which trailed 3-0 late in the first half, rallied to tie the score (3-3) with 28:34 remaining but couldn’t put the brakes on Denison’s capable offense the rest of the way.
Monarch sophomore Alex Mohr scored five goals for the second straight game as D-S improved to 2-2 on the year - all conference games. The Cyclone girls dropped to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the Hawkeye Ten.
Denison’s passing and ball-handling abilities inside the 18-yard box, along with Harlan’s inability to clear the ball from the same area, led to the late scoring barrage that included three insurance goals in a span of less than three minutes.
“Their forwards are strong... and they’ve been playing together,” said HCHS coach Jared Boysen. “They were freshmen last year and they’ve grown a lot (in) just one year.
“We just broke down defensively."
