Cyclones win three, Vikings go 2-1 at Red Oak quad

RED OAK (Jan. 17) -- The beat rolled on for the Harlan Community wrestling team Thursday as the Cyclones picked up three more decisive dual wins over AHSTW, Kuemper Catholic and Red Oak.
HCHS opened the quad meet at Red Oak Middle School by defeating a short-handed AHSTW squad 64-9, then overcame slow starts to earn Hawkeye Ten wins over the Knights, 54-22, and the host Tigers, 51-23.
The Cyclones went 19-8 in contested matches, recorded 13 pins and improved their record to 23-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference.
The Vikings, now 13-4, saw their dual winning streak end at nine against Harlan before earning a pair of exciting victories over Red Oak, 42-39, and Kuemper, 42-36. Top-ranked 182-pounder and defending Class 1A state champion Gabe Pauley continued to rest an injured shoulder for AHSTW, which also competed without heavyweight Brady Canada, Gabe Madsen (170) and Jaedan Rasmussen (145).
The meet ended on a high note for the Vikings when freshman 152-pounder Denver Pauley pinned Kuemper’s Collin Wiederin in the third period of the final match with the team score tied at 36. Pauley trailed 4-0 entering the third period and Wiederin chose top, where he had been successful for much of the match. Thirty-six seconds later, Pauley won by fall.
Seven HCHS wrestlers finished 3-0 on the night, but only one of those seven - 10th-ranked (2A) 145-pounder Oscar Olmos - had to compete in three matches. Moving up to 152 against AHSTW, Olmos scored a 13-3 major decision vs. Denver Pauley, then added first-period pins against Kuemper and Red Oak.
Also going 3-0 were Carter Bendorf at 170, Nathan Henry (195), fifth-ranked Derec Weyer (285), Luke Musich (120), Ethan Lemon (126) and Dalton McKinley (138).
