Cyclones take out scrappy Bluejays in substate opener

HCHS boys look to reach Monday Substate 8 final

HARLAN (Feb. 20) -- Senior Logan Klaassen snapped a recent shooting slump by hitting 6-of-9 three-pointers, including three treys during a pivotal 16-3 third-quarter run, as the Harlan Community boys basketball team opened Class 3A substate play with a 68-56 quarterfinal win over Perry here Tuesday.
Shane Chamberlain led the way with 23 points and Brett Sears added 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench for the Cyclones, who missed 16 free throws (18-for-34) and struggled to contain Perry guard Rashon Ivory (26 points).
Still, HCHS never trailed in the game - delayed one night by inclement weather - and snapped a two-game losing skid to advance to the Substate 8 semifinal round. The Cyclones (14-7) hosted Creston (11-11) Friday night after the Panthers rallied to beat Carroll 69-65 in overtime Tuesday.
Friday’s winner will meet either fifth-ranked Glenwood (20-2) or Atlantic (14-8) in Monday’s 7:00 p.m. Substate 8 final at Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln.
“In the tournaments you want to win and advance, so we’re just pleased to move on,” said HCHS coach Mitch Osborn. “We’re not going to complain about wins."
