Cyclones sweep Kuemper quad, Vikings finish 2-1

CARROLL (Jan. 18) -- Compared to its previous meet five days earlier, good fortune was on Harlan Community’s side here Thursday night as the Cyclone wrestlers went 3-0 in a quadrangular against Red Oak, Kuemper Catholic and AHSTW.
HCHS started the night with a 34-33 win over Red Oak when Oscar Olmos came through with a 14-4 major decision in the final match at 145 pounds. Following a 60-18 victory over Kuemper, the Cyclones rallied from behind once again and beat AHSTW 37-28 on Carter Bendorf’s clinching 10-3 decision at 160.
The tightly-contested dual wins were a welcome sign for HCHS head coach John Murtaugh after the team lost two duals on criteria and another by just three points in going 5-3 at the Mount Ayr Tournament January 12-13. The Cyclones are now 15-9 overall and 6-2 inside the Hawkeye Ten Conference.
“I thought we were snake-bit there for awhile, but it worked out a lot better tonight so hats off to the kids for that,” Murtaugh said.
AHSTW (19-7 overall) started the meet with impressive wins over Kuemper, 53-22, and Red Oak, 44-24, before giving the Cyclones all they could handle in the third and final round of the night. The Vikings held leads of 12-0, 21-10 and 25-16 but HCHS was able to score 21 of the last 24 points.
Olmos was one of five Cyclones to finish 3-0 on the night. Also going 3-0 were Ethan Lemon (2 pins), Bendorf (2 pins), Nick Foss (1 pin, 1 major) and Daniel Soll (1 pin).
For AHSTW, 3-0 wrestlers on the night included Jaeden Rasmussen (2 pins, 1 major), Seth Kiesel (1 pin), Gabe Pauley (tech. fall, major, pin), Joe Kenkel (1 pin) and Brady Canada (1 pin).
