Cyclones split double dual vs. Denison, Atlantic

ANITA (Jan. 4) -- It was an up and down start to 2018 for the Harlan Community wrestling team Thursday night as the Cyclones earned a 1-1 split vs. Denison-Schleswig and Atlantic/CAM in Anita.
HCHS opened the double dual with three straight pins and handled Denison 48-33 but was outpinned 7-0 and allowed the last 36 points in a 58-18 loss to the Trojans, who also routed D-S 72-12.
The Cyclones, now 5-6 overall and 4-2 in Hawkeye Ten Conference duals (fifth place), took a 36-0 lead vs. Denison and finished the dual 5-4 with five pins in contested matches. The went just 2-8 against Atlantic, however, and faded down the stretch after pulling within 22-18.
HCHS head coach John Murtaugh cited two points of emphasis the team wanted to improve upon in the meet: wrestling more physical and not giving up uncontested points. The results were mixed.
Junior 145-pounder Oscar Olmos was the only Cyclone to finish 2-0 in the meet, including an impressive 10-4 decision vs. Atlantic’s Colton Mudd.
