Cyclones seek Bladt’s 400th win at No. 10 Glenwood

GLENWOOD (Sept. 15) -- One way or another, some history will be made Friday night when Harlan Community travels to Glenwood for a key early-season matchup in Class 3A, District 7.
If the Cyclones win, Hall of Fame coach Curt Bladt will become just the third head football coach in Iowa prep history to reach the 400-win mark for his career. If the Rams prevail, they will celebrate a win over Harlan on home turf for the first time ever in 24 tries.
Both teams enter the 7:30 p.m. contest with 1-0 district records. HCHS is 2-1 overall while 10th-ranked Glenwood is 3-0 following last week’s come-from-behind 13-12 win at Carroll.
Not surprisingly, Bladt - on the cusp of joining Dick Tighe (432) and Jerry Pezzetti (405) in the state’s 400-win club - wasn’t interested in talking about personal milestones during preparation for this week’s big game.
“It’ll happen if it happens,” said Bladt, whose 399-59 record during the course of 40 seasons gives him a state-best winning percentage of .871 to go along with a state-leading 11 state titles.
“This will be a tough test - right here, right now... We’ve got to slow ‘em down, hope for errors... maybe get a turnover.”
Takeaways have been a crucial part of both teams’ success so far this year. The Cyclones’ much-improved defense has already forced 10 turnovers (three shy of last year’s total) while the Rams have eight takeaways, including four fumble recoveries in another comeback win (24-14) vs. Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson in Week 2.

HCHS (2-1, 1-0) at Glenwood (3-0, 1-0) -- Friday, September 15, 7:30 p.m.
