Cyclones, Rams split softball twin bill

 GLENWOOD (June 14) -- Harlan Community took one game from 15th-ranked (Class 4A) Glenwood and nearly pulled off a sweep last Thursday night, instead settling for a Hawkeye Ten Conference softball doubleheader split.
 HCHS dominated the first game 10-1 before losing the night cap 5-4 in nine innings. The game one loss was just the second in conference play for the Rams, who ended the night 9-2 in the H-10.
 The Cyclones finished the twin bill with 28 total hits, including five by Kate Heithoff and four each by Madison Schumacher (three doubles) and Lexi Larsen (two doubles).
HCHS 10, Glenwood 1
 The Cyclones scored in all but two innings of game one and racked up 17 hits to complement the three-hitter pitched by Morgan Schaben (1 walk, 8 strikeouts).
 Emily Brouse (3 RBI), Larsen (2 doubles) and Kennadi Carey (2 runs, 2 RBI) had three hits apiece for HCHS. Heithoff, Tianna Kasperbauer and Schumacher all went 2-for-4 while Schaben and Molly Gubbels both hit a double.
Glenwood 5, HCHS 4 (9)
 The Rams won a see-saw extra-inning affair in game two when two walks and an error brought home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth. Both teams finished with 12 runners left on base.
 Heithoff went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Cyclones, Schaben was 2-for-3 with two walks, Schumacher hit a pair of doubles and Gubbels singled twice.
 Kasperbauer started in the pitching circle and went four innings, allowing four hits and three runs (one earned). Schaben allowed four hits and two runs (one earned) in the final four and a third. She struck out five, walked five and hit a batter.
