Cyclones post first shutout in 40-0 romp at Carroll

HCHS defense holds Tigers to 97 total yards

CARROLL (Sept. 29) -- For a Harlan Community defense that has showcased dramatic improvement all season long, Friday night’s 40-0 shutout win at Carroll provided a nice feather in the cap.
Realistically, it was only a matter of time.
The Cyclones, who had held three of their first four district opponents to seven points each, recorded the team’s first shutout since blanking the Tigers 36-0 on the same field two years ago.
Carroll was held to just 97 total yards and five first downs and did not breach the Harlan 35-yard line all night. The Tigers managed only 29 yards and one first down after halftime.
“I was impressed with the entire defense, especially the defensive line of Caleb Bieker, Derec Weyer, Caleb Brouse and Jake McLaughlin,” said HCHS defensive coordinator John Murtaugh, whose unit allowed 38.6 points per game last season.
“This is a nice achievement for the guys because Carroll has a solid group.
“We have a mantra of ‘pursue, tackle and get takeaways.’ We pursued, we tackled. We didn’t get any takeaways tonight but we’re ahead of what we did last year, that’s for sure. They play hard and play together. They’re a very disciplined unit, so I’m really happy with them.”
Offensively, the Cyclones totaled 350 yards and got four touchdowns from senior Nick Foss, who opened the scoring with a 75-yard punt return less than two minutes into the game. Foss netted 173 rushing yards on 19 carries, adding TD runs of 68, 1 and 32 yards.
HCHS, now 5-1 overall and 4-0 in Class 3A, District 7, extended its winning streak to five games using a third different starting quarterback as Johnathan Monson took the place of Preston Mulligan, who was resting an ailing shoulder but still threw a late touchdown pass in relief.
The Cyclones are tied with Winterset (5-1, 4-0) for first place in the district standings going into this week’s showdown at Winterset.
