Cyclones outlast Heelan in four-set semifinal

Frederick’s 30 kills lead potent HCHS attack

CEDAR RAPIDS -- By the time it was over, Bishop Heelan coach Mary Miller had seen enough.
Despite their best efforts, including a victory in set one, the Crusaders were unable to slow down Harlan Community senior Taylor Frederick long enough to pull the upset in Thursday’s Class 4-A State Volleyball Tournament semifinal match.
Frederick opened and closed each of the last three sets with a kill to lead the 2nd-ranked Cyclones past the 8th-ranked Crusaders, 24-26, 25-19, 25-17, 25-22 inside the US Cellular Center. The HCHS middle hitter finished with a match-high 30 kills and a .431 efficiency and got plenty of help from sophomore Haley Leinen (11 kills, .440) and junior Brenda Hopkins (10 kills, .241) along the way.
