HCHS receiver Kevin Campbell hauls in a catch against ADM last Friday.

Cyclones open key two-game road trip at Carroll

CARROLL (Sept. 29) -- During this same stretch of the 2016 football season, back-to-back home losses vs. Carroll Public and Winterset put the final dagger in Harlan Community’s fading playoff hopes.
The Cyclones finished 4-5 overall, tied for fourth place in District 7 and missed out on postseason play for the second time in three years.
Twelve months later, HCHS enters the final four weeks of the 2017 regular season in control of its own destiny for a district title and again poised to face the Tigers and Huskies in consecutive weeks - this time on the road.
Harlan’s own Raccoon River Challenge begins Friday when the Cyclones (4-1 overall, 3-0 District 7) travel to Carroll (2-3, 1-2) for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff and look to avenge last year’s 35-32 home defeat.
“We could have (beat) them, no doubt about that, but we just didn’t get the job done last year so we’ll try and get her done this year,” said HCHS head coach Curt Bladt.
“Last year we did not [control our playoff destiny] but this year we do, so we’ll see if we can stay in the driver’s seat. I don’t know if there’s a seat belt on it or not.”
The current District 7 standings show HCHS and Winterset at 3-0, followed by Glenwood and Denison-Schleswig at 2-1. Carroll and Atlantic are both 1-2 and will be fighting for their playoff lives tonight.
Carroll’s road to Week 6 has certainly been eventful if nothing else. The Tigers split their non-district games vs. state-ranked South Central Calhoun (Class 2A) and Sioux City Heelan (3A) and have played three district games decided by a total of seven points.
Carroll lost to Glenwood 13-12 in a game they led 12-0 after three quarters, then struggled to beat ADM 17-14 before losing a hard-fought 22-19 game at Winterset last Friday.

HCHS (4-1, 3-0) at Carroll (2-3, 1-2) -- Friday, September 29, 7:30 p.m.
