Cyclones open district play vs. No. 9 DC-G

Kloewer-led Mustangs beat HCHS 34-0 last year

HARLAN -- During an impressive 3-0 start to the season, Harlan Community has already exorcised some painful memories from a downtrodden 2014 campaign.
Losses of 42-7 to Carroll and 24-7 to Lewis Central last year have been replaced by road wins of 36-0 and 38-21, respectively, the past two weekends. HCHS is averaging 325 total yards per game - up 133 from a year ago at this time - while holding the opposition to just 9.3 points a contest.
Which brings us to Friday night at Merrill Field, when the 5th-ranked (Class 3-A) Cyclones finally play their first home game - and their District 8 opener - against 9th-ranked Dallas Center-Grimes (2-1, 1-0 in District 8). Varsity kickoff is set for 7:30.
For HCHS and coach Curt Bladt, there’s no better time than now to exorcise more ghosts. Bladt need not be reminded of last year’s deflating 34-0 loss in Grimes, when quarterback Kyle Juhl went down with a first-quarter ankle injury and Mustang QB Austin Kloewer outgained the Cyclones all by himself.
