Cyclones match last year’s tally of 17 state qualifiers

HCHS boys earn nine state entries, many ranking high; HCHS girls improve PRs to qualify eight events

GLENWOOD -- For the second straight year, Harlan Community has qualified a combined 17 boys and girls entries for the 2016 Co-Ed State Track and Field Championships in Des Moines.
Both Cyclone squads placed fifth at Thursday night’s Class 3-A State Qualifying Meet in Glenwood. More importantly, they each qualified eight events for the state meet, set for Thursday through Saturday (May 19-21) at Drake Stadium. The HCHS boys will have one more state entry than the girls as both Jon Bieker and Curtis Schnack qualified in the discus.
Thursday marked the third time in his three years as head coach that Sam Brummer’s Cyclone boys qualified in eight events; however, this year’s group appears poised to score a lot more points on the blue oval. Of their nine state entries, eight rank among the top eight in Class 3-A (according to Quik Stats) when it comes to season-best performances.
