Cyclones, Huskies set to battle for first

Both teams enter potentially muddy game with 4-0 records in District 7

WINTERSET (Oct. 6) -- For the first time this season, Class 3A, District 7 will have an outright leader following Friday night’s football clash between Harlan Community and Winterset.
 Weather permitting, that is.
With thunderstorms and heavy rain in the forecast both Thursday and Friday, the Cyclones (newly ranked at No. 8 by the Associated Press) are scheduled to take on the Huskies at 7:30 p.m. in Winterset. Both teams are 5-1 overall and 4-0 in district play with just three weeks left in the regular season.
Glenwood and Denison-Schleswig are tied for third place with 3-1 district marks while the remaining four teams in District 7 all have at least three losses.
Friday’s Harlan-Winterset winner won’t yet clinch one of the two guaranteed playoff spots per district, but will certainly put itself in a good position after both squads finished with losing records last fall.
“(A win) would get us in the neighborhood,” said HCHS coach Curt Bladt. “There’s a lot of possibilities yet. We’ll worry about those when the bridges get built.”
By Week 7 last year, both teams were basically just playing for pride when the Huskies came to Harlan and handed the Cyclones a sound 47-21 defeat - their second win vs. HCHS in the last three meetings.
This time around, there’s a lot more at stake as the two teams have combined to win nine straight games. HCHS suffered its only loss to a 5-1 Lewis Central team in Week 1 while Winterset lost 29-12 to a 5-1 Norwalk team in Week 2.
HCHS and Winterset have three common opponents so far this season - ADM, Carroll and Creston/O-M - and the comparative scores favor the Cyclones, who have beaten those three teams by an average margin of 41 points. Winterset has defeated the three common foes by an average of just 13 points, including last week’s 35-19 win at Creston.

HCHS (5-1, 4-0) at Winterset (5-1, 4-0) -- Friday, October 6, 7:30 p.m.
