Cyclones handed titanic opening defeat, 45-13

Lewis Central outgains HCHS 369-0 in first half; Titans secure first home win in the series

COUNCIL BLUFFS -- Two big takeaways emerged from Friday night’s Week One football game between Harlan Community and Lewis Central.
 A) The Titans are a very good team and likely a force to be reckoned with in the Class 4-A playoffs later this fall.
 B) The Cyclones have a lot of work to do before facing the upper-tier teams in Class 3-A, District 7.
LC dominated every facet of the game on Friday, holding HCHS to zero first-half yards in building a 38-7 lead and routing the Cyclones 45-13 for the program’s first-ever home win over Harlan.
Sophomore quarterback Max Duggan ran for four touchdowns and threw for one more as the Titans beat the Cyclones for only the fourth time in 50 tries all-time, but the second time in the last three years. HCHS had been 24-0 in all previous games on Lewis Central’s field, but was outmatched from the start on this night.
The Titans scored points on six of their first seven offensive drives while their defense forced five three-and-out punts and a turnover on the first six Cyclone possessions.
The only real bright spot for HCHS was a 92-yard kickoff return by Nick Foss that made it a 17-7 game with 2:33 left in the first quarter and offered a brief glimmer of hope. LC would score again six plays later, however, and never looked back.
