Cyclones finish eighth in H-10 Boys Golf Tournament

HARLAN -- On a warm and windy day for golf, the Harlan Community boys struggled to post any standout scores on their home course and slipped to eighth place in the Hawkeye Ten Conference Tournament held Monday (May 8) at the Harlan Golf and Country Club.
HCHS finished 26 strokes behind the H-10 champion Atlantic Trojans, posting a team score of 351 as all six Cyclone golfers placed between 20th and 40th among the 65-player field.
Ryan DeMott paced the Cyclones’ balanced scorecard with a two-round, 18-hole total of 86, followed by Matthew Bjoin with 87, Ross Petersen 88 and Kevin Campbell 90. Troy Nowatzke and Jay Swanson both shot 92.
The conference team championship was decided by just one stroke as Atlantic held off Kuemper Catholic, 325-326, followed by third-place Clarinda’s 333. At last year’s conference meet in Glenwood, the top six teams (including HCHS) scored better than this year’s winning score.
Kuemper’s Jared Tigges pulled away from the pack with a second-round 35 (1-under par) to claim the individual H-10 championship by three strokes over Jake Olsen of Atlantic, 74 to 77. Only six out of 12 medalists were able to break 80 for the tournament.
