Cyclones erase 13-point deficit to beat Kuemper

Chamberlain’s late threes help seal the victory

CARROLL (Jan. 26) -- As Harlan Community coach Mitch Osborn hollered ‘Carolina’ three times from the bench to activate his team’s late-game delay offense, senior Shane Chamberlain was already rising up for a three-pointer from the left corner.
 Swish.
Chamberlain’s second trifecta in less than a minute gave HCHS its largest lead of the game, 70-63, with about two and a half minutes left and proved to be a knockout blow as the Cyclones overcame a 13-point second half deficit and won 80-73 Friday night at Kuemper Catholic.
Chamberlain also drilled a three from the top of key with 3:18 remaining and scored a team-high 24 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists. His final trey followed two Cyclone missed shots and offensive rebounds on the same trip as they protected a four-point lead.
Osborn’s ‘Carolina’ call came just a second too late, but he wasn’t complaining.
“When we started hollering, he was going up with it. It was a great look,” Osborn said. “He is clutch and we want him shooting it.”
HCHS hit 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to cap a season sweep of the Knights (8-7) and improve to 12-3 overall. Its Hawkeye Ten record remains 6-3.
Logan Klaassen matched Chamberlain by hitting three treys on the night and scored 17 points (14 in the second half). Point guard Jared Moser, who also had a big fourth-quarter three, scored nine of his 13 points in the second half and dealt a career-high nine assists. Deren Schmitz grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds to go with 12 points and three blocked shots.
Parker Badding converted 14-of-17 free throws and finished with 31 points for Kuemper.
