Cyclones crush Monarchs behind Foss six-TD night

HCHS standout nets 343 all-purpose yards, ties touchdown record for third time in 56-14 district title-clinching win

HARLAN (Oct. 13) -- Tailback Nick Foss continued adding to his senior year highlight reel Friday night, totaling 343 all-purpose yards and scoring six touchdowns as Harlan Community clinched a District 7 championship with a 56-14 rout of Denison-Schleswig at Merrill Field.
Foss opened the scoring with an electric 85-yard TD run on the Cyclones’ first play from scrimmage and later scored on a 44-yard pass from Deren Schmitz.
Foss added touchdown runs of 12, 18, 1 and 2 yards while netting 242 rushing yards on 19 carries in less than two and a half quarters. He has now rushed for 1,464 yards on the season (first in Class 3A) and scored 28 total touchdowns going into this week’s regular-season finale at Atlantic.
It was Foss’ second six-TD game of the year and the third of his career, tied with Ryan Fagan and Todd Hansen for the single-game school record. Foss is the only player in that group to score six TDs in a game more than once.
“He’s just so smooth. He just takes it in stride,” said HCHS head coach Curt Bladt. “He’s a great kid, a 4.0 student. He’ll pick up things in the locker room and take care of his teammates and so on and so forth, so he’s just a great team member.”
The exploits of Foss, though, weren’t the only big positive to take away from Friday’s lopsided win as the 6th-ranked Cyclones improved to 7-1 overall and 6-0 in District 7. Going into Week 9, HCHS has already clinched the district title and a first-round home playoff game. Glenwood (7-1, 5-1) will be the district runner-up following Friday’s 28-0 win over Winterset (5-3, 4-2).
