Cyclones bow out to eventual state-qualifier Winterset

HCHS finishes 15-3 following substate semifinal

EARLHAM -- A season full of highlights ended two wins shy of a state tournament berth last Wednesday (May 24) when Harlan Community lost to Winterset, 5-1, in a Class 2-A, Substate 8 boys soccer semifinal at Earlham.
The 8th-ranked Huskies (15-1), who advanced to state with a 1-0 win over No. 2 Sioux City Bishop Heelan on Saturday, led HCHS 3-0 at halftime and pulled away with two goals in the final six minutes, four seconds. The final score was somewhat deceiving, according to Cyclone coach Dave Voge, as Winterset scored in the final minute of each half and notched its second score of the match on an own goal that bounced into the net off a Harlan defender.
The 15th-ranked Cyclones, who finished 15-3, were playing without injured senior Richard Blackman and also lost starters Michael Heithoff and Drew Voge for significant portions of the second half.
“Winterset was the superior team, but the score is not indicative of how the whole game went,” Coach Voge stated.
HCHS scored its only goal on a Tanner Fink penalty kick with 32:47 left in the game. The PK followed a yellow card on Huskie goalie McGwire Hopkins, whose hard foul on Heithoff forced the Cyclone midfielder  to miss about 25 minutes of action.
Season highlights:
The 2017 season will go down as a memorable one for the Cyclones, who set a school record for victories (15) and finished in a three-way tie for the Hawkeye Ten Conference championship with Denison-Schleswig and Lewis Central at 6-1.
HCHS posted 12 shutouts on the year and put together a 10-game winning streak that ended with a controversial 1-0 (PK shootout) loss at Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln in the regular-season finale.
The Cyclones will say goodbye to three seniors off the postseason varsity roster (Richard Blackman, Devin Mahoney and Wren Koch), along with Jared Eckermann, Noah Culp, Jacob Henry, Tyler Wollaston, Alan Holloway and Frank Knowles.
