Cyclones beat D-S at the wire

HCHS erases 34-7 deficit, posts winning score with :09.2 to go

DENISON -- It wasn’t a season-saving win by any means, but for one night, at least, the Harlan Community football team made some thrilling, feel-good memories to take away from a year of hard knocks and disappointment.
Trailing Denison-Schleswig 34-7 late in the first half, the Cyclones stormed back with three touchdowns during a three-minute span of the second and third quarters, then scored the game-winning TD and extra point with just :09.2 remaining to beat the Monarchs 35-34 and snap a two-game slide.
Sophomore Brett Sears’ second touchdown pass of the night, a three-yard strike to Caleb Rasmussen on third-and-goal, tied the score before Kyle Knudson’s fifth PAT kick delivered the winning point. The Cyclone defense, meanwhile, pitched a second-half shutout, capped by Rasmussen batting down Denison’s long desperation pass at the 15-yard line as time expired.
HCHS improved to 3-5 overall and 2-4 in Class 3-A, District 7, tying Winterset for fifth place in the standings with one game left. Denison dropped to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in the district.
