Cyclones 1-1 at Winterset Softball Tourney
WINTERSET (May 25) -- Harlan Community finished 1-1 at the rain-shortened Winterset Softball Tournament on Saturday, beating ninth-ranked (2A) Van Meter 3-1 in five innings and losing to Interstate 35 (Truro) 5-3 in six. The tournament was originally scheduled to include three games over two days, but Friday’s action was cancelled due to wet grounds.
HCHS 3, Van Meter 1
The Cyclones scored all three of their runs in the third inning to support pitcher Morgan Schaben, who allowed just one hit and one unearned run in five innings, walking four and striking out six. Emily Brouse, Julia Schechinger and Kennadi Carey all drove in a run during the third.
Jordan Heese led HCHS at the plate with two singles, Schaben doubled and Carey had an RBI single.
I-35, Truro 5, HCHS 3
Schechinger’s two-run home run in the sixth wasn’t enough to rally the Cyclones from a 5-1 deficit in the second game of the day.
Schaben started in the pitching circle and allowed three runs (two earned) in two innings. Tianna Kasperbauer struck out nine I-35 batters in four innings of relief, allowing three hits and two runs.
