Cyclones’ Foss, Olmos earn state meet tickets

Foss wins by injury default just :09 into district final vs. defending state runner-up; Olmos places 2nd

HARLAN (Feb. 10) -- After weeks of buildup, the anticipated showdown between Harlan Community senior Nick Foss and Woodward-Granger sophomore Cody Fisher lasted just nine seconds.
Foss earned a district title and return ticket to state during Saturday’s Class 2A, District 4 Wrestling Tournament in Harlan, but it wasn’t exactly what he had in mind.
In the championship match at 195 pounds, third-ranked Fisher (last year’s state runner-up) tried to land a quick leg shot but Foss (ranked 2nd) countered with a lethal whizzer (overhook) move and took Fisher to the mat, where he landed hard on his right shoulder.
As Foss (37-1) went for the pin, the match was stopped after just nine seconds and Fisher (51-2) was unable to continue, losing by injury default. Both wrestlers advanced to this week’s state tournament at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, with 2A competition set to begin Thursday at 9:00 a.m.
“I was really looking forward to a good match and being able to get tested a little bit before I go down to state,” said Foss, who placed fifth at 182 last season. “Having it (end) that way, it just doesn’t feel as good as it should.”
HCHS junior Oscar Olmos also qualified for state Saturday after earning the district runner-up spot at 145. Olmos (38-12) will be making his state meet debut.
“I’m excited,” he said. “I pushed myself harder this year in practice and had good people around me like (Foss). He helps me push myself... He’s a big mentor.”
Two other Cyclone district qualifiers - sophomores Ethan Lemon (120) and Wyatt Obrecht (138) - both had their season come to an end after placing fourth with 0-2 records.
