Cyclone wrestlers win Tri-Center Invitational

HCHS senior Derec Weyer named tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler; Ethan Lemon also places first

 NEOLA -- Ethan Lemon and Derec Weyer earned individual championships and five other Cyclones placed second as Harlan Community claimed the team title of Saturday’s 16-team Tri-Center Wrestling Invitational.
 Weyer, ranked fifth in Class 2A at heavyweight, was voted the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler by the coaches after going 4-0 on the day and defeating a pair of state-ranked 1A foes. Weyer pinned 9th-ranked Trenton Dirks of Westwood in the semifinals before winning 5-1 over No. 2 Arron Olson of Missouri Valley in the finals.
 Lemon cruised through the 126-pound bracket with three straight pins, meanwhile, raising his season record to 20-3.
 Five more Cyclones lost in the championship round to place second: Wyatt Obrecht at 132, Dalton McKinley (138), Oscar Olmos (145), Carter Bendorf (170) and Joey Arkfeld (220). McKinley’s loss came down to an ultimate tiebreaker while Olmos and Bendorf lost to Missouri Valley wrestlers ranked fifth and third, respectively, in Class 1A.
 HCHS totaled 233 points on the day to hold off Mo. Valley’s 205. Kuemper Catholic (145.5), Nodaway Valley (142) and Westwood (137) rounded out the top five.
 Overall, 11 out of 13 HCHS wrestlers placed in the top five, including third-place efforts by Luke Musich (120), Jesse Schwery (182) and Nathan Henry (195). Luke Freund placed fifth at 106.
