Cyclone track squads win 18 total events at Carroll meet

    CARROLL -- The Harlan Community girls and boys track teams both won nine events at Thursday’s Carroll Early Bird Co-Ed Invite (March 23).
    No team scoring was kept at the outdoor season opener and all times were hand held. Teams who competed included HCHS, Carroll, Boone, Kuemper Catholic and Earlham.
    The HCHS girls won four out of seven relays on the day, placing first in the shuttle hurdle, 4x200, 4x100 and 4x400. Cyclone sophomore Greichaly Kaster swept the distance events, winning the 3,000 in 11:39.88 and the 1,500 in 5:27.08. Also placing first for the Cyclone girls were Allison Bruck in the 100-meter hurdles, Molly Gubbels in the 200 dash and Chloe Hansen in the 400 hurdles.
    The HCHS boys placed first in five out of seven relays, winning the 4x800, shuttle hurdle, distance medley, sprint medley and 4x400. The sprint medley relay is a new event for boys this year, bringing the total to 19 events for both the girls and the boys. The Cyclone boys also claimed a double-individual winner in junior Deren Schmitz, who placed first in both the 400-meter dash and the 200 dash. Caleb Brouse won the discus and Caleb Bieker won the shot put.
