Cyclone squads place fifth at competitive Lynx Invite

Kaster, Van Baale finish in top 10 for HCHS girls; Voge comes in 12th to pace HCHS boys

COUNCIL BLUFFS (Sept. 2) -- Medalists Greichaly Kaster, Brecken Van Baale and Drew Voge all placed in the top 12 Saturday morning as the Harlan Community girls and boys cross country teams both finished fifth against a tough field at the Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln Invitational.
Competing on the spread-out, wooded course of Iowa Western Community College, both Cyclone squads improved their standing by about two spots and 20 points compared to last year.
The HCHS girls, who were running against four state-ranked opponents, scored a 125 and finished just 16 points behind 9th-ranked (3A) Denison-Schleswig. The top three girls teams were Southeast Polk (60), top-ranked (3A) Bishop Heelan (79) and 13th-ranked (3A) Glenwood (85). Shenandoah-Essex, ranked fifth in 2A, placed ninth out of 12 teams.
Paced by three runners in the top six, Thomas Jefferson was the boys team champion with an impressive score of 38, followed by Lewis Central (90), Missouri Valley (123), Abraham Lincoln (126) and HCHS (152).
The Cyclones likely would have placed higher, but lost one of their top runners, Trey Gross, to a sprained ankle midway through the race. Voge led the team with a 12th-place finish, followed by Michael Clemons, Andrew Shelton and Mitchell Rueschenberg running in a tight pack and placing in the low-to-mid 30s.
Individual champions on the day were Raegan Andersen of Denison and Charlie Saulsbury of Heelan.
Kaster, a two-time state qualifier currently ranked 26th in 3A by the Iowa Association of Track Coaches, was steady throughout the race in placing seventh and breaking the 20-minute barrier in 19:59.42.
